2 — including deputy — shot during burglary investigation in Margate, BSO says

A Broward Sheriff’s deputy and another person were hospitalized after a shooting Thursday afternoon during a burglary investigation in Margate, the Sheriff’s Office said.

About 2:30 p.m., deputies with the Burglary Apprehension Team were working on an investigation in the 6100 block of Northwest Second Street, “when a deputy-involved shooting occurred,” BSO said in a statement shortly after 4 p.m.

“The deputy was struck by the suspect, but fortunately he was protected by his bulletproof vest and did not sustain life-threatening injuries,” the statement said. “The suspect was also shot.”

Additional information has not been released.

It is at least the 18th shooting involving South Florida law enforcement officers in 2025.

Most recently in Broward, two BSO deputies shot at a man in Tamarac on Nov. 30 after responding to a call that he had been shooting a gun inside of a home, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. The suspect, David Pagan, 35, of Tamarac, allegedly “raised or pointed the firearm at the responding deputies” before he was shot. Pagan survived and was taken to Broward Health North.
