Man drowns when trying to rescue his struggling children in ocean on Father’s Day

A Lauderhill man died on Sunday after trying to rescue two of his children who appeared to be in distress in the ocean off Fort Lauderdale beach.

About 7:20 p.m., Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue received reports of a drowning near the B Ocean resort on Seabreeze Boulevard at the south end of the public beach. The city’s Ocean Rescue lifeguards had gone off duty at 7 p.m., but heard the call and were first on the scene.

They were able to rescue a young girl who was struggling, while her father, Antwon Wilson, 33, was nearby in the water trying to help. A second adult who was also trying to help left the water after becoming overwhelmed, according to a Fire Rescue report.

The second child was also rescued, according to Fort Lauderdale Police.

The lifeguards returned to the ocean and located Wilson underwater a few minutes later. They brought him to shore and paramedics began lifesaving measures.

One of the children, the bystander and Wilson were taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where Wilson was pronounced dead.

An investigation is underway, but the death appears to be the result of an accidental drowning, Fort Lauderdale Police said.
