South Florida temps will drop into the 50s, the coolest weather since last winter

South Florida is set to see a chilly few days later this week with temperatures dropping to numbers not seen since last winter.

A string of cold fronts from northern parts of the United States will push down to South Florida and reduce temperatures to the lower 50s in some areas beginning on Thursday and extending through Sunday.

“From Thursday through the weekend, you’re looking at highs in the mid-70s across South Florida,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Will Redman. “In terms of early morning lows, it looks to be low- to mid-50s across the coastlines.”

Temperatures haven’t hit that low since mid-March, Redman said. Last winter, temperatures first took a dip to the 50s at the very end of November.

Before the first chill of the season hits, remnants from Tropical Storm Sara will sweep through South Florida, bringing a line of scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms on Wednesday.

Redman said rain chances for the region will hover between 40% and 50% throughout Wednesday.

With hurricane season winding down and South Florida’s dry season now in full swing until May, conditions are much likely to be colder and drier over the next few months.

From now on, Redman said South Florida will fall into a “pattern where we warm back up, and then there might be another front that comes through after that. … It might just continue to swing up and down because that’s usually how winter time goes.”
