Second gentleman Doug Emhoff heading to Broward to rally voters for Harris, other Democrats

Second gentleman Doug Emhoff is coming to Broward County for a Get Out the Vote rally.

He’ll visit Broward on Wednesday to “rally Floridians to vote early for Vice President Harris, Governor Walz and Florida Democrats,” the campaign said. Emhoff, the vice president’s spouse, will speak on behalf of her presidential candidacy.

In-person early voting begins in most of Florida, including the big three South Florida counties, on Monday. Broward is the biggest Democratic stronghold in the state, and turnout of the party’s voters is critical to any hope the party has of doing well statewide.

Details about when and where he will appear haven’t yet been released.

Emhoff will also stop in Miami-Dade County on Wednesday for a campaign fundraising reception.

The second gentleman’s visit is the kind of thing Florida Democrats have been clamoring for.

His appearance sends a message that the Harris campaign and national Democrats haven’t abandoned the state, and are willing to deploy a top surrogate to help the party generate excitement that could help other Democratic candidates.

Many of Emhoff’s GOTV events since early voting has been getting underway in different parts of the country have been focused on presidential battleground states where the close contests could determine the outcome of the election. On Saturday he headlined a Get Out the Vote rally in Arizona. On Sunday, he was scheduled for a Get Out the Jewish Vote event in Michigan. On Tuesday, he’ll be in North Carolina.

Top Florida Democrats have been insisting for months that they’ll do better in Florida than pundits, and Republicans, predict.

They have pointed to Emhoff’s previous visit to the state, when he visited the traditionally Republican stronghold of The Villages, the Central Florida retirement megalopolis, on Sept. 13. Hundreds of people showed up to hear him speak before he kicked off a parade of 350 golf carts supporting Harris’ campaign, the kind of caravan that has in the past been more associated with Republican support.
