Moskowitz, Gaetz team up with resolution to honor father killed while shielding family at Trump rally

Florida lawmakers Jared Moskowitz and Matt Gaetz teamed up Monday to introduce a bipartisan resolution to the U.S. House of Representatives honoring the life of Corey Comperatore, the father killed while shielding his family from gunfire at the rally for Donald Trump on Saturday.

Comperatore, 50, was killed during the attempted assassination of the former president that left two others injured in Butler, Pennsylvania. When the bullets began to fly, the retired volunteer fire chief dived on top of his wife and two daughters to block them with his own body. They survived the shooting unscathed.

The resolution introduced by Moskowitz, a Democrat, and Gaetz, a Republican, “recognizes the life of Corey Comperatore and his service to the country, and that he “gave his life for his wife and two daughters.” It also “calls on United States Government officials and politicians to condemn the attempted assassination of former President Donald J. Trump” and “condemns political violence in all its forms.”

Comperatore was regarded by many as a hero in the aftermath of the shooting. He worked as an engineer and was a proud Trump supporter who loved to fish, according to reports.

Both Moskowitz and Gaetz serve as part of Florida’s congressional delegation in Congress. Moskowitz represents portions of Broward and Palm Beach counties, and Gaetz represents the western Panhandle.

“Corey Comperatore led his life keeping his community safe and spent the last moments of his life shielding his family from danger. No matter what side of the aisle you’re on, those are the brave qualities we should all salute. He deserved the ability to go to a political rally and return home. I hope that my colleagues will join us in honoring his sacrifice,” Moskowitz said in a statement.

He “should not have lost his life exercising his First Amendment right by going to a political rally,” Gaetz’s statement said. “There is no place for political violence in America! Corey’s selfless and courageous actions exemplify the highest standards of bravery and devotion to both his family and his country. This resolution seeks to commemorate his extraordinary bravery and unwavering commitment to public service after he heroically sacrificed his life while shielding his family from gunfire intended for President Trump.”

The two other injured were identified as David Dutch, 57, of New Kensington, Pennsylvania, and James Copenhaver, 74, of Moon Township, Pennsylvania, according to the Pennsylvania State Police. Both were in stable condition.

Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.
