Monday kicks off a week of stormy afternoons and possible flooding

Monday afternoon could offer some tumultuous weather, said the National Weather Service. Expect rounds of showers and thunderstorms throughout the region. Individual storms could become “strong to marginally severe in nature,” the forecast said.

The weather service warned that any storm could produce frequent lightning and heavy rainfall, as well as small hail.

The forecast said that such storms could result in flooding, especially in vulnerable urban areas, and the most intense squalls could have wind gusts from 40 mph to 50 mph. Funnel clouds and a brief tornado “cannot be ruled out.”

It will remain hot. Air temperatures will be in the low 90s and heat indices will reach just above 100 degrees. Some areas could reach a heat index of 103 degrees.

On Twitter, the weather service said, “The best chances for strong t-storms will be in the late afternoon to early evening, especially in the east coast metro area. With any slow moving storms w/ heavy rain, localized flooding will be possible.”

The rest of the week looks stormy as well.

On Tuesday, sunny with a high of 92 will give way to afternoon thunderstorms with new rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

The pattern of afternoon thunderstorms and localized rain will repeat itself as the week progresses, with intensity picking up on Friday; winds will increase to 9 mph to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph and Friday will have an 80% chance of rain.
