Here are the winners of the Sun Sentinel’s annual high school journalism contest

For nearly 30 years, the South Florida Sun Sentinel has honored the best high school journalists. Students from 11 schools in Broward and Palm Beach counties entered the annual contest with material published in the 2022-2023 school year. Congratulations to the young journalists of tomorrow.

News Writing

  • First Place: Alex Dobreva of the Sword & Shield at South Plantation High School for “Human Trafficking … THE ultimate identity theft.”
  • Second Place: Lauren Albano of the Torch at Olympic Heights High School for ““Orlando’s Maxwell Frost, the youngest U.S. Congressperson, is a progressive voice in a state becoming increasingly red.”
  • Third Place: Kate Becker and Brynn Schwartz of the Eagle Eye News at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School for “Out of Bounds.”
  • Honorable mention: Jad Dargam of The Legend at Suncoast High School for “Pride Down the Toilet.”
  • Honorable mention: Priya Gowda of the Muse at Dreyfoos School of the Arts for “Overcommitted, Under Accepted.”
  • Honorable mention: Rebecca Kittay of the Bullseye at West Boca High School for “Pulling the Plug on Bullying.”

  • Second place: Sachin Moosai of The Torch at Olympic Heights High School for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever award seasons wins and nominations a fitting tribute to Chadwick Boseman.”
  • Third Place: Jad Dargam of The Legend at Suncoast High School for “Pardon Our French.”
  • Honorable mention: Sanaiya Pinnock of the Calibre publication at Western High School for “Toxic Culture” and “Finding Purpose.”
  • Honorable mention: Carldenis Raymond of the Bullseye at West Boca High School for “The Raymond Review: Nope.”

Opinion/Column Writing

  • First Place: Jenna Lee of the Muse at Dreyfoos School of the Arts for “The Art of Funding” and “Give Us (New) Voices.”
  • Second Place: Patrick Gohl of the Tornado Times at Pompano Beach High School for “Dimming Futures for Florida Students” and ” Where Are the Books? State Blocks Learning By Removing Texts From School Libraries.”
  • Third Place (tie): Eagle Eye Editorial Board of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School for “Boundless blabbering.”
  • Third Place (tie): Lily Singer and Grace Brill of Eagle Eye News at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School for “Food deserts create disastrous short and long term effects.”
  • Honorable mention: Sophie Raab of the Cobra Chronicle of Park Vista High School for “Misogynistic music industry.”
  • Honorable Mention:  Joshua Foreman and Daniel McDonald of the Cobra Chronicle of Park Vista High School for their point/counterpoint on digital music.

  • Third Place (tie): Mason Silverstein of The Torch at Olympic Heights High School for “OH basketball looks to close out season strong.”
  • Honorable mention: Khadija Doha of the Sword & Shield at South Plantation High School for “When Soccer Isn’t Just a Game.”
  • Honorable Mention: Emma Lawman of the Bullseye of West Boca High School for “The Hidden Dangers of Sports.”
