Hazardous material prompts evacuation at warehouse in Pompano Beach

POMPANO BEACH — Fire rescue officials and Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the scene of a hazardous material leak in Pompano Beach Tuesday afternoon, prohibiting anyone from walking nearby.

Fire trucks and ambulances lined up outside of Baer’s Furniture Warehouse in the 1500 block of Northwest 12th Avenue about 1 p.m. Tuesday.

The Sheriff’s Office released minimal information, saying only that media reports of two fatalities inside of the building were incorrect.

“There’s no one deceased at the warehouse,” said Veda Coleman-Wright, a spokesperson for BSO. “No one has been transported.”

The Sheriff’s Office declined to provide further details. Carey Codd, another spokesperson for the office, said he did not want to release any “inaccurate or incomplete” information.

The incident involves a hazardous material, and both BSO and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue are responding, he said.

“This is all sort of evolving and very, very fluid,” Codd said.

Workers were evacuated from the furniture warehouse, some of them feeling sick, WSVN reported.

Officials cordoned off the area surrounding the warehouse for several blocks.
