Florida’s 15-week abortion ban will have dramatic effects on patients and providers. Here’s what to expect.

The proposed changes:

* A ban on abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy without exclusions for rape, incest, or human trafficking. The current cutoff is 24 weeks.

* The bill defines the change as 15 weeks from the first day of a person’s last normal menstrual period

* The only exclusions this bill allows for are a threat to the mother’s life, if the mother would lose major bodily function or if there is a fatal fetal abnormality. And that abnormality has to be approved by two doctors.

In a separate move, the state wants to clear the way for another law that would include:

* A 24-hour waiting period between when women seeking abortions are provided with the information and when the abortions may take place.

Next steps:

* The abortion bill needs to be voted on by the full Senate.

* Gov. Ron DeSantis would need to sign the bill into law.

* The law would go into effect on July 1.
