Sharks Men and Women Both Earn Second in SSC Mayors’ Cup Rankings

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern athletics programs have finished the 2018-19 season in second place among Sunshine State Conference programs in the race for both the men’s and women’s SSC Mayors’ Cup All-Sports Trophy, maintaining the tradition of success for the Sharks among the league’s top programs.

The efforts from the Sharks men’s teams tied the previous program high ranking, rising to second place for the first time since 2010-11 in a razor-thin race, a mere 3 points away from taking the trophy at 47.5 points – despite having fewer sports than many SSC teams. Men’s basketball’s 11 points for the program’s first regular season SSC title paced the Sharks and NSU brought in 17 points following winter championships in basketball and swimming. The Sharks also tallied 18 points for top-3 finishes in baseball and golf.

Delivering their best finish since the 2016-17 season, the women’s teams produced 57 points, topped by the women’s soccer’s second-place finish, while a majority of points was derived from top-4 finishes in basketball, swimming, golf and tennis.

“Our goals every year include athletic competitiveness within the Sunshine State Conference, especially since our league is without question the most competitive Division II league in the country,” Director of Athletics Michael Mominey said. “With that said, we are more focused on the sustainability of athletic success and the indicators towards that success. Finishing near the top of the league in both the men’s and women’s Mayors’ Cup standings says a lot about the kind of athletic year we did have. However, more importantly it says more about the hard work and dedication of our student-athletes, coaches and staff – NSU is a special place.”

The Mayors’ Cup scoring is based on regular season finish for sports with conference standings and championship finish for cross country, golf, rowing, and swimming. For sports where all schools compete, scoring begins with 11 points awarded for finishing first to one point for finishing eleventh. In sports where fewer than 11 teams compete, first place points will be awarded based on the number of teams competing. Head-to-head results will break SSC regular season standings so that points may be assigned. When head-to-head competition cannot break a tie Mayors’ Cup points will be split.
