A SWAT standoff ended with the suicide of a man suspected of killing his estranged wife in Weston, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.
Angel Garcia Sanchez, 39, was tracked down at his home in the 500 block of Sheppard Road in Venus, about 40 miles south of Sebring, on Thursday night, by the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Marshal’s task force and Broward Sheriff’s Office, detectives said.
When the SWAT team’s armored vehicle approached the Central Florida home, Sanchez fired several shots at it, but no officers were injured, officials said.
Officers tried to talk to Sanchez for more than two hours but got no response. Sanchez was later found inside the home, dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, investigators said.
He was wanted for the murder of his wife Carolyn Espinosa, 34, whose body was found about 4 p.m. Wednesday at her home in the 3600 block of San Simeon Circle in Weston, detectives said.
The couple had been separated and Espinosa had begun the process of filing for a divorce recently, investigators said.
They are survived by two sons, ages 7 and 12, and a 3-year-old daughter, according to family and friends who have started a GoFundMe page to raise money for Espinosa’s funeral and her children’s future.
Investigators are asking anyone with additional information to contact Detective Zack Scott at 954-321-4162. Anonymous tips can be given to Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477 or online at browardcrimestoppers.org.
