One woman is facing charges and another is hospitalized with critical injuries following a carjacking, a kidnapping, and a couple of collisions, police said.
It began about midnight Tuesday when a woman’s car broke down on Interstate 95 near the exit to Ives Dairy Road in Miami-Dade County, investigators said.
When another motorist stopped to help, the woman whose car broke down jumped in their truck and drove off with two passengers inside: a grandmother and her 11-month-old granddaughter, officials said.
That truck was involved in two collisions in Miramar a short time later, said police spokeswoman Tania Rues.
“One crash occurred on State Road 7 and Miramar Parkway, and another crash on Miramar Parkway and Southwest 62nd Avenue,” she said.
In the second crash, the pickup that had been carjacked broadsided an SUV, causing severe damage and trapping a woman who was driving the SUV until rescuers could extricate her.
“The victim in the final crash [at Southwest 62nd Avenue] was transported to Memorial Regional Hospital in critical condition,” Rues said, adding that at no time were police involved in a chase.
The grandmother and infant inside the pickup truck were not hurt.
Miramar police helped the Florida Highway Patrol with the arrest of the carjacking suspect. She is facing charges for the two crashes, Rues said. Other related charges are pending the outcome of the FHP investigation.
