The closing speech from the man of the hour will not come until Tuesday night’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers, at what likely will be Dwyane Wade‘s closing act at AmericanAirlines Arena.
But in advance of the Heat‘s ceremony, the tributes already have flooded forward, the type of heartfelt words from those touched as much by the man as the moments he created on the court.
Included have been videos from Heat President Pat Riley, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, as well as an emotional commemoration of Wade’s season-long jersey exchanges, this time with several personal twists, including a reflective moment to Wade’s emotional response to last year’s horrific Parkland shootings and one family that he most touched.
First, the emotional jersey moments:
Then the words of Riley, who drafted Wade out of Marquette in 2003 and then coached him to the first of Wade’s three NBA championships:
“I wasn’t easy to play for, but I think everybody felt that I wanted the very best for them. And I think Dwyane, from the very first day, I just loved his competitive nature. He’s special, really unique and special. So how do I feel about him? I love the guy. I’ve been around him 16 years and there isn’t anybody that ever played in Miami that will have a bigger legacy than Dwyane. Nobody.
“I think everybody saw something absolutely unique athletically. He was the best in the world in 2006, above everybody. It’s going to be a sad day when he retires. It really will be. But it will be a great day for him because he knows he’s gotten everything out of the game. A player of his generation unlike any other.”
And then there are the words from Silver:
Gatorade then posted a video, a re-worked version of School House Rock’s, “Three is a Magic Number,” sung by John Legend. The video explores how “three” is far more than just Wade’s jersey number, but an integral part of his life.
From there, Twitter released a tribute video that included interviews with Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant and wife Gabrielle Union, among others.
