A second man has been charged with murder almost five months after a fatal shooting and double-rollover crash in Pembroke Park.
Christopher Avery Campbell, 29, of Miami, was arrested Tuesday, for the Oct. 26 shooting death of Wadarius Harris, 27, of Miami, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.
Campbell joins another man from Miami-Dade, Eric Alexander Vail Jr., 27, who was charged with murder Jan. 29.
According to the arrest reports, Campbell and Harris were in an ongoing feud that involved several drive-by shootings, one of which killed Campbell’s mother in Miami-Dade County.
DNA, blood samples, ballistics and other evidence indicate Campbell and Vail were driving north in the 3200 block of Southwest 52nd Avenue in a Nissan Altima about 5:10 a.m. when they pulled up alongside Harris, who was driving a Chevy S-10 pickup, and opened fire with an AR-15-style rifle, investigators said.
Harris was struck twice and died instantly, but his truck drifted to the left, sideswiping the Altima, forcing it into a utility pole and support wire, and causing it to flip on its roof, detectives said.
The pickup also hit a utility pole and rolled over. The gun, several bullet casings and debris from both vehicles were found scattered in the street.
Harris died at the scene of the crash. Campbell, who was extricated from the driver’s seat in the Nissan, and Vail, who was found bleeding and staggering in the street, were taken to the hospital.
Surveillance videos obtained from a condominium complex near Harris’s home showed him leaving for work about 5 a.m. The videos also showed two men, wearing similar clothing as Campbell and Vail, walking toward Harris’s pickup and then getting into a car to follow him.
Other surveillance videos along the route clearly showed the Nissan following the truck at a time of the morning when there was very little other traffic, the arrest reports said.
Investigators concluded that Vail was the shooter and Campbell was the Nissan’s driver by re-enacting the shooting, which showed the spent bullet casings being ejected from the passenger-side window.
Campbell was ordered held without bond at his first court appearance, Wednesday while Vail was already jailed without bond, records showed.
