Endeavor Elementary School in Lauderhill had to be evacuated after someone started a small fire Wednesday morning in one of the school restrooms, fire officials said.
School staff managed to quickly douse the flames with a fire extinguisher before they could spread, said Lauderhill Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Jeff Levy.
“It did not trigger the sprinklers,” he said. “That’s probably a good indication of how small [the fire] was.”
The fire was reported about 9:23 a.m. in the school at 2701 NW 56th Ave., he said.
There were no serious injuries and no one was taken to a hospital but one person required care.
“There was one patient treated on scene, having an asthma attack,” Levy said. “There was a lot of smoke in the building when we got here.”
Fire crews were ventilating the smoke from the school so classes could resume.
“We were allowing students back into another portion of the school, but not the wing of the building that was affected until the investigation is concluded,” he said.
Lauderhill police, Lauderhill Fire Rescue and the Office of the State Fire Marshal were looking in to the cause of the fire, Levy said.
