A Tesla swerved through three lanes of traffic, hit a median and some trees and burst into flames, killing the driver, Davie Police said Sunday night.
The male driver likely lost control of the Tesla, said Davie Police spokeswoman Vivian Gallinal.
The car caught fire immediately, she said.
Part of Flamingo Road south of Interstate 595 is closed as Davie police investigate the crash in the 1200 block of Flamingo Road.
The family has not been notified, police said.
Teslas do not use gasoline-powered engines. The carmaker’s vehicles are powered by batteries.
There is a “post-crash potential” of fire if a battery cell is punctured, “just like there would be post-crash with a gas tank,” industry analyst Karl Brauer told the South Florida Sun Sentinel last year. Fire is possible in any vehicle accident, which causes sparks and heat, he added.
