Asking Eric: Wife sidelined and shut out by late husband’s family

Dear Eric: My late husband and I married nine years ago; both of our previous spouses had died. We were both in our 80s. At the onset, we had agreed to split all of our expenses 50/50 and we wrote up a pre-nup. As time passed, his daughter began to question our financial arrangement, so she decided to take over his banking and accounts. That was fine with me. Later on, she also unilaterally decided to monitor his health arrangements as well. She and her brother decided to take him off his... Read More

Why attacking Iran could be riskier than capturing Maduro

When President Donald Trump said in January that a U.S. “armada” was heading to Iran, he compared it with the kind of force used in the military’s recent lightning operation in Venezuela, saying it was “able to rapidly fulfill its mission, with speed and violence.” Now, as Trump weighs options against the Iranian government, including limited strikes, experts caution that an attack on Iran would be significantly more complex than an operation in Venezuela and could potentially draw... Review: Despite challenges, Slow Burn’s ‘Beautiful: The Carole King Musical’ doesn’t miss a beat

“Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,” receiving a highly entertaining production by Slow Burn Theatre Co., is more than a story about how a teenager evolved into one of the first successful female rock singer-songwriters. For many of us, “Beautiful” is the soundtrack of our youth, a touchstone of the culture of the 1960s and ’70s, and a chronicle of the shift of American rock music from light, teeny-bopper tunes to deeper lyrics. Slow Burn’s “Beautiful,” running through March... Read More

Florida plan to verify citizenship could snare lawful registered voters in bureaucratic morass

An effort in the Florida Legislature sounds simple and straightforward: ensure that only U.S. citizens vote in state elections. Republicans who control the state Senate and House of Representatives are advancing legislation they say would do just that, brushing aside warnings that they are about to create a logistical and bureaucratic morass — that could result in thousands of citizens losing their ability to vote. They envision a far-reaching effort, with two central components. Registered... Read More
