Man dies after deputy-involved shooting during ‘disturbance’ call near Fort Lauderdale

A 37-year-old man died Sunday after Broward Sheriff’s deputies responded to a “disturbance” call in a neighborhood near Fort Lauderdale and a deputy-involved shooting unfolded.

Someone called 911 shortly after 5:30 p.m. about a person walking around with a gun in the area of the 2500 block of Northwest Ninth Court “with children in the area, and possibly under the influence of drugs,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Monday.

Witnesses told deputies that the armed man, later identified as Edward Jerrel Dolison, had gone into his home, where two other people were also inside, the news release said.

After deputies repeatedly ordered Dolison to come outside, he eventually came out holding a gun and pointed it at his own head, the news release said. Deputies told him to put down the gun, but Dolison ran back inside his home.

“Detectives said a deputy then moved toward the open front door and made visual contact with Dolison. At that point, Dolison fired his gun resulting in the deputy discharging his weapon,” the news release said.

Dolison was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy will be performed to determine his cause of death, the Sheriff’s Office said.

It was not clear from the news release whether Dolison shot himself or if the deputy fatally shot Dolison. Sheriff’s Office spokespersons and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement did not respond to an email seeking clarification.

The deputy is on administrative assignment, as is standard procedure. FDLE and BSO’s Internal Affairs are investigating.

Deputies found two guns inside Dolison’s home, one which had its serial number removed, the Sheriff’s Office said.

It is at least the 14th shooting involving South Florida law enforcement officers since the start of the year. Last week, a man was shot by at least one Broward Sheriff’s deputy and killed after barricading himself for hours inside of a vacant home in Pompano Beach.

Last month, a Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy shot and killed a man in Cooper City after the man shot himself during a fight with his mother and “attacked” one of the deputies who approached him.
