Dolphins’ McDaniel talks Jalen Ramsey, Tyreek Hill and more at OTAs

MIAMI GARDENS — Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel addressed a series of topics surrounding the team ahead of Wednesday’s session of offseason organized team activities.

When it comes to trade talks surrounding star cornerback Jalen Ramsey, McDaniel said “zero has changed.”

The Dolphins and Ramsey mutually agreed to part ways more than a month ago, but a trade partner still has not been found. Miami stands to save more than $18 million toward the salary cap if it trades him after June 1, as opposed to before.

McDaniel deflected questions on whether he believes a resolution could be found before mandatory minicamp more than a week into June or if he’s sad the relationship with him went sour, stating he’s focused on coaching his players at the day’s practice.

His biggest star player on the offensive side, wide receiver Tyreek Hill, is still recovering from offseason wrist surgery.

Hill, at this stage in the offseason, may run routes without blocking and McDaniel said he has attacked the strength program.

While Hill is also training on the side for a race with Olympic sprinter Noah Lyles, McDaniel said bluntly, “I have no idea, nor do I care.”

The coach said his star wideout is still working on routes and football-related activity to prepare for the coming season.

Between offensive linemen Austin Jackson and James Daniels, Jackson is further along and has done more, McDaniel said. Daniels is still working back in his recovery process, but McDaniel said he likes where he is. He also said Daniels has been an active participant in the film room.

Jackson is returning from a knee procedure last season, while Daniels tore his Achilles while with the Pittsburgh Steelers early last season.

McDaniel said outside linebackers Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb are both able to participate in most things most days, but they will proceed with caution.

Phillips and Chubb each rehabbed torn ACLs in a knee — Phillips in Week 4 of last season and Chubb at the end of the 2023 season, which cost him the entire 2024 campaign. Phillips had just returned from a torn Achilles in 2023 when he played early last season.

While Wednesday was the first OTA session open to the media, the Dolphins held their first practice of OTAs Tuesday.

McDaniel’s reward system of highlighting a player for practice performance with an orange jersey and rights to musical selection at practice began with Phillips and cornerback Ethan Bonner as the first orange jersey players for their work in offseason workouts.
