A woman carrying a gun was shot and killed by Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies in Deerfield Beach Wednesday night, officials say.
About 9:30 p.m., deputies responded to a call about a disturbance at a restaurant near the 1900 block of Northeast Second Street, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The woman had been asked to leave the restaurant. Deputies arrived to find her in the parking lot, according to reports. A confrontation occurred, and multiple deputies opened fire, shooting and killing the woman. One deputy was taken to a nearby hospital.
The Sheriff’s Office did not say exactly what led to the deputies opening fire or whether the deputy who was hospitalized was shot.
“A threat was presented to the deputies themselves,” Sheriff Gregory Tony told reporters at the scene late Wednesday. “… It doesn’t require an individual to fire at us in order for us to have to engage them.”
Wednesday’s shooting is the second fatal deputy-involved shooting in Deerfield Beach in the last three weeks. On April 21, a BSO deputy shot and killed a woman who was charging at him with a large knife, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The woman was later identified as 60-year-old Debra Lobbins.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating both shootings.
