A student at Miramar High School was arrested on campus Monday morning after metal detectors revealed he had an unloaded gun, police and Broward County Public Schools officials said.
Janice McIntosh, a spokesperson for Miramar Police, said the unloaded weapon was “immediately detected” and confiscated by school security as the boy entered the building. The student did not have any ammunition with him.
Principal Winfred Porter said in a message to families Monday morning that there were no threats toward the school, students or staff. The student “will face appropriate school disciplinary measures.”
“The weapon was secured without incident once the metal detector was activated, and the student was taken into custody by police,” the principal’s statement said.
The police department and School District did not provide additional information.
Possession of a firearm on school property is a third-degree felony. Numerous students and at least one parent have been arrested after allegedly having guns, some loaded, on Broward County campuses in recent years. In March 2022, a 7-year-old boy at Dillard Elementary School was found with a gun.
