Archbishop McCarthy’s Gonzalez grabs Olympic runner-up at state girls weightlifting

Archbishop McCarthy senior Sophia Gonzalez finished as the Class 2A Olympic runner-up in the 139-pound weight class at the FHSAA girls weightlifting state championship at RP Funding Center in Lakeland on Friday and Saturday.

The Olympic category consisted of the combined total of the clean-and-jerk and snatch. The traditional competition included the total of the bench press and clean-and-jerk.

Gonzalez registered a 195 in the clean-and-jerk and 135 in the snatch for a 330 total in the Olympic competition. She also placed third in the traditional competition with a 145 in the bench press for a 340 total.

“This competition is a testament to the hard work and dedication I’ve poured into this sport,” Gonzalez said. “As I compete in my second state championship, I’ve seen myself grow and reach my full potential, proving that with determination, anything is possible.”

Gonzalez previously captured the Olympic regional championship and traditional regional title with a 335 total in her senior campaign.

Archbishop McCarthy junior Seychelles D’Andrea placed third in the traditional competition in the Unlimited weight class with a 425 total. She also finished fifth in the Olympic category with a 345 total. D’Andrea recorded a 205 in the clean-and-jerk and 140 in the snatch. She finished with a 220 in the bench press.

“It’s my first year competing and it has been a blessing to see how much love I’ve grown to have for this sport,” D’Andrea said. “From the support of teammates and the coaches, I’ve felt nothing but love. I’m so grateful to have participated and I can’t wait to see what next year has in store.”

Suncoast’s Andrea Gonzalez placed fifth in the traditional category in the 169-pound weight class with a 360 total. She also finished eighth in the Olympic competition with a 315 total. Dr. Joaquin Garcia’s Paige Levitz placed 10th in the Olympic category in the same weight division with a 300 total.

Middleburg earned the Class 2A traditional championship while Leesburg captured the Olympic title.

Palm Beach Central’s Berg, Park Vista’s Bell earn 4th in 3A Traditional

Palm Beach Central’s Kimberly Berg placed fourth in the traditional competition in the 199-pound weight class with a 375 total.  She also finished sixth in the Olympic category with a 350 total.

Park Vista’s Jayda Bell placed fourth in the traditional category in the 110-pound weight division with a 290 total.

Wellington’s Danielle Newell placed fifth in the traditional category with a 285 total in the 110-pound weight class. She earned seventh in the Olympic event with a 250 total. Emma Johnson placed sixth in the traditional event with a 370 total in the 199-pound weight class. She finished 10th in the Olympic category with a 325 total. Audrey Dellavecchia placed 10th in the traditional event with a 300 total in the 129-pound weight division.

Dwyer’s Sharlyssa Amaya placed fifth in the Olympic event with a 335 total in the 169-pound weight class.

Olympic Heights’ Alani Rose placed seventh in the Olympic category with a 210 total in the 101-pound weight division.

Pace captured the Class 3A championship in both the traditional and Olympic events.

King’s Academy led by Foster in 1A Traditional

The King’s Academy was led by Rebekah Foster at the Class 1A state competition. She placed sixth in the traditional category in the 154-pound weight class. Foster recorded a 170 in the bench press and 145 in the clean-and-jerk for a 315 total.

Wewahitchka captured the Class 1A championship in both the traditional and Olympic categories.
