18-year-old Coral Springs man dies days after crash in Tamarac

An 18-year-old from Coral Springs died from “extensive injuries” days after a crash in Tamarac that resulted in him hitting a tree, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

Michael Mills Jr. was driving a gray 2011 Infiniti G37 east near the 8100 block of Southgate Boulevard shortly before 7 p.m. May 21 with an 18-year-old female passenger. Nicole Rivera-Vazquez, 18, of North Lauderdale, was also driving east in a gray 2023 Toyota Corolla in the outside lane with a minor male passenger when she attempted to switch into the inside lane, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The rear driver’s side of the Toyota hit the front passenger side of the Infiniti and sent both cars into the median, the Sheriff’s Office said, where Mills Jr.’s car hit a tree and came to a stop. Rivera-Vazquez then crashed into a small tree, and her Toyota stopped in the opposite westbound lanes, facing oncoming traffic.

Tamarac Fire Rescue took Mills Jr. and his passenger, Jaileen Mitchell, to local hospitals. The Sheriff’s Office did not say whether Rivera-Vazquez or the minor boy were injured.

Traffic Homicide detectives learned Saturday that Mills Jr. died from his injuries and are investigating. Speeding is not considered a factor, the Sheriff’s Office said.
