A collision between a truck and two cars sent three people to the hospital and caused significant southbound delays on Interstate 75 through Davie and Weston Thursday morning.
A woman, 36, and a boy and girl, both 8-years-old, all from Tamarac, had to be extricated from the gray 2014 Nissan Altima that was partly wedged under the trailer, said Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Alvaro Feola.
“One female driver was airlifted to Memorial Regional Hospital in critical condition and two kids were taken via [ambulance] as a precaution,” he said.
The cause of the collision was being investigated, but Michael Steven Stanley, 45, of Davie, said he was, “caught completely off guard,” when his white 2016 BMW was sideswiped seconds before the crash.
“All of a sudden I see something gray come from my left side and my airbag popped open,” he said.
“When I got out of the car I saw the truck and was [wondering] what did I hit,” said Stanley, who was not hurt in the crash.
The wreck, that also involved an estimated 60-gallon fuel spill, happened about 5:15 a.m. on the southbound lanes of I-75 approaching the Griffin Road exit and caused delays back to I-595 during the investigation and cleanup.
The damaged vehicles were towed away by 9 a.m.
The Nissan was changing lanes when it sideswiped the BMW on its right before hitting the tractor trailer on its left, rupturing the truck’s fuel tank, according to the FHP crash report.
Truck driver Yambi Ovidio Adan Morgado, 35, of Like Oak, in north Florida, was unhurt, the report said.
