A Margate man suspected in a fatal shooting in Miami Beach turned himself in Thursday, authorities said.
He surrendered two days after police released surveillance video of a shooter firing a gun on a Miami Beach street moments before a man was shot and killed nearby.
Alan Michael Alt, 32, has a history of arrests in Florida for DUI, reckless driving, theft and marijuana and has lived in Fort Lauderdale, North Miami Beach and Virginia Beach, Va., records show.
Alt turned himself in at the Miami Beach Police Department late Thursday morning, said Ernesto Rodriguez, a spokesman for the agency.
Moments after the images of the gunman were recorded near 13th Street and the beach wall on Saturday night, a man was shot several times and killed after a confrontation on a nearby corner in a section of South Beach popular with tourists, police said.
The fatal shooting happened at about 11:41 pm. at 14th Street and Collins Avenue, a few blocks south of the Lincoln Road tourist destination, police said.
The man who died was 33, had arrests for battery, robbery and drug sales and possession, and was known to police in the Ocean Drive area of South Beach. His identity is being withheld until relatives are notified.
Alt told police he shot the man in self defense after he was attacked and beaten in an alley in what he presumed was a robbery attempt, according to Alt’s statement.
Five years ago, Alt was sentenced to 40 days in jail, one year of probation and 75 hours of community service after he pleaded guilty in Palm Beach County Circuit Court to driving under the influence and refusing to submit to sobriety tests, court records show.
Alt was driving 90 mph with a damaged front end and airbags deployed when he was pulled over on Interstate 95 in Palm Beach Gardens, according to his arrest report.
He also was shoeless, shirtless and covered in vomit, the report said.
The arresting officer described Alt as argumentative, slurring, yelling, foaming at the mouth, mad, apologetic, confused, demanding and hyper-dazed, the report said.
Alt’s arrest report indicated that he was married.
When a Fort Lauderdale woman who shared Alt’s last name was contacted by telephone on Thursday, she told a reporter not to call her number again.
Alt’s 2008 DUI arrest by Lauderhill police was downgraded to reckless driving and a 2014 domestic violence arrest resulted in dropped charges, records show.
Alt was sentenced to probation in 2016 for grand theft and marijuana possession charges.
