Author to share grandfather’s Holocaust story in Boynton Beach

Ron Siesser, who tells the story of his Holocaust survivor grandfather in a newly published book, will speak at Anshei Chesed Congregation in Boynton Beach on Sunday, Jan. 19.

The book, “Live and Be Counted: A Boy’s Heroic Tale of Survival, Faith and Family” (Austin Macauley Publishers; $13.95) is written from the perspective of Siesser’s 11-year-old son, Eli, who was inspired by the story of his great-grandfather, Alfons Sperber, to write a school report about immigration.

Sperber, 97, now a resident of Queens, New York, had rarely spoken about his harrowing experiences during World War II when he was the same age as his great-grandson. As Sperber speaks with Eli over Zoom, readers learn about his escapes from his native Vienna into France, where he hid in a monastery, and ultimately to a refugee camp in Switzerland.

Author Ron Siesser, 47, lives in Teaneck, New Jersey.
