PEMBROKE PINES — A 13-year-old boy was arrested Tuesday after police say he opened fire at a convenience store clerk who tried to flee during an attempted armed robbery in Pembroke Pines, striking him multiple times.
A little after 5:30 p.m., Pembroke Pines Police responded to a shooting at Pasadena Drive Thru Food Store in the 8100 block of Pasadena Boulevard, according to a release posted on social media.
The Sun Sentinel is withholding the suspect’s name because he is a minor. Police declined to identify the victim.
The teen was attempting to rob the store when the cashier tried to run away, the release said. The teenager then shot in his direction, striking him multiple times, before leaving the store.
The cashier called 911, and paramedics transported him to a nearby hospital for “non-life-threatening injuries,” according to the release.
Officers then searched the area and found the teen, who was armed with a gun. He now faces charges of attempted homicide, possession of a firearm by a juvenile, and armed robbery, according to police spokeswoman Amanda Conwell.
The teenager also had an active warrant for another armed robbery in Pembroke Pines in October.
No other suspects remain at large and there is no ongoing threat to the community, police said.
Neighbors and customers of Pasadena Drive Thru were shocked by the shooting, describing the store employees as kind people..
“I’m so mad,” one woman wrote on Facebook. “Those are really nice people. Hope he will be ok.”
Carl Ross told the Sun Sentinel in a message that he has lived in the area for over 40 years and goes to the store every day.
“Great people,” he said.
