Flood watch issued for South Florida for Wednesday and Thursday. Heavy rains will pair with king tides.

The National Weather Service issued a flood watch that begins Wednesday morning and runs through Thursday morning. The warning stretches from Jupiter south to Homestead, and includes nearly all of the populated areas of Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties.

Additionally, the weather service upped their rainfall predictions for Wednesday morning through Thursday to 2 to 5 inches with locally higher amounts that could reach 8 inches. Though the main rain event will begin Wednesday, heavy rainfall will be possible Tuesday afternoon over portions of the east coast metro and this could result in localized flooding in prone urban areas, the weather service said.

The areas of high rainfall potential were in Broward and Palm Beach counties.

There is also a risk of coastal flooding due to king tides this week. A king tide happened at 8:36 a.m. Tuesday,  and there will be another one at 9:21 a.m. Wednesday, based on measurements at the South Port Everglades tidal station.

“The flood watch was put out in advance because we’re in the new moon phase,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Will Redman. “There is potential for coastal flooding in general, and if we have rain on top of that it could worsen things.”
