State Sen. Shevrin Jones, D-Miami Gardens, is one of 50 “prominent voices” that President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign says it is using to deliver his message.
The Biden campaign said Wednesday the surrogates would “take a leadership role in delivering the campaign’s message and engaging voters across the country.”
Jones, whose district formerly included part of South Broward, was an early supporter of Biden’s. He traveled to Iowa to campaign for Biden ahead of that state’s 2020 presidential caucuses at a point when it wasn’t clear who would win the Democratic presidential nomination.
The first openly LGBT, Black state senator in Florida, Jones is also a member of the Democratic National Committee.
One other Floridian, freshman U.S. Rep. Maxwell Frost of Orlando, the first member of Generation Z elected to Congress, is part of what’s called the Biden-Harris campaign’s National Advisory Board.
It includes many prominent names, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who is chairing the group.
The 50 members include Democrats who unsuccessfully ran for president in 2020 — U.S. Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Elizabeth Warren — and Democrats who were thinking about running in 2024 if Biden didn’t — Governors Phil Murphy of New Jersey, Gavin Newsom of California and J.D. Pritzker of Illinois.
A campaign news release said the group would “participate in regular media interviews, assist with fundraising efforts and events, leverage their networks and platforms to amplify the campaign’s message to voters, and engage directly with voters through grassroots efforts and events in key battleground states.”
