Voters in America increasingly identify as “independents.”

But the reality is, most of those who decline to identify as Democrats or Republicans ultimately vote for candidates who are supported, financed and under the control of one of two political parties.
Voters in national elections don’t really influence policy; they select from one of two political points of view.
Candidates for local and state offices, such as legislators or city commissioner, listen to and respond to local needs and concerns. Garbage must be picked up, potholes fixed, first responders must be prompt, schools must be open, and, as the expression goes, the trains must run on time.
On the national level, voters have only the right to vote for a candidate who’s owned lock, stock and barrel by one of the two major parties, and the candidates take their policy positions from party leaders. The people (who split their tickets) and cast ballots for president of one party and senator or representative of the other are not independents. They’re confused.

Plenty of ‘due process’
I keep reading about how badly ICE treats the illegal immigrants, and how they need to receive “due process.”
When they crossed the border they should have been given a notice to appear to determine if they were able to stay here. Unfortunately, too many did not show up in court to receive their “due process.”
So now, as ICE rounds them up and puts them in detention centers, they will get their “due process,” unless they committed a crime. It’s time we at least acknowledged these crimes and the actual victims.

Bring back some sanity

Richard Shotwell/Richard Shotwell/Invision/AP
Paul Sorvino, an imposing actor who specialized in playing crooks and cops like Paulie Cicero in the mob movie Goodfellas, died at 83.
Straight out of “Goodfellas,” Henry Hill defined the job of his boss Paulie as “the boss over everybody,” and when you get in trouble with the cops you pay off the boss who makes the trouble go away.
That’s what we have with Trump. He doesn’t care about the rest of us. He cares about his “Goodfellas” ripping off society. Join his club, pay him off and you might get pardoned.
We have never seen this level of corruption in society. Join his club and he’ll send in the military to kidnap a national leader and steal its oil. It’s that simple.
Trump even got someone to give him her Nobel Peace Prize!
Get out the vote while we still can — before ICE shuts that down, too. ICE is his domestic armed militia.
Say the wrong thing to them and you might get shot in the head.
Bring back some sanity to our society.
What will it take for more people to be outraged by these actions?

The Sunday crossword
Please be advised that I am a senior citizen who has subscribed to your newspaper for 47 years.
First and foremost, I am a crossword puzzle buff.
Your puzzles on Monday through Saturday are extremely easy to read. The letters are large and the print is dark.
However, your Sunday crossword puzzle page is not legible. The letters are very small and the print is very light. This is very frustrating.
I would appreciate it very much if you would address this problem. I am sure that I am not the only senior citizen or younger person who has the same complaint. Kindly check this out. Hopefully you can remedy the problem.
