Partner of Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis arrested, accused of assaulting him

The live-in partner of Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis was arrested Tuesday and accused of physically assaulting the mayor and dragging him across the road last week, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Daniel Curran, 34, was arrested on charges of battery on a person 65 years or older, a felony, and violating an injunction for protection against domestic violence.

Curran had been living with the 72-year-old mayor at his Fort Lauderdale home since March 2025, according to the affidavit. The two had also been engaged, according to social media posts. In September, Trantalis received a restraining order against Curran, saying that Curran had thrown objects at him and sent life-threatening messages to him and the police chief, according to the petition for the restraining order.

Despite the restraining order, Trantalis wrote in a recent court filing that he allowed Curran back into his home and wanted Curran to seek counseling “and attempt to better himself.”

Then, according to the affidavit, Curran pushed Trantalis outside of his home on Saturday, grabbed his leg and dragged him approximately 15 feet across the road.

The suspect also took the keys to the mayor’s house, car and office, according to the court filing, which seeks an emergency hearing for a permanent restraining order.

“I thought maybe there was some way to rehabilitate Danny by trying to reconnect and hopefully steer him into counseling and mental health treatment,” Trantalis testified during Curran’s first appearance hearing on Friday. “And I failed at that, and at the end, this past weekend, he threw me to the ground. He committed everything that’s in the information, with regard to the violent act against me. And then I realized that there was no hope for this relationship.”

A judge set a $6,000 bond for Curran and ordered him to have no contact with Trantalis and no firearms, weapons or ammunition.

The Broward State Attorney’s Office has sent a request to the Governor’s Office to have a different State Attorney’s Office handle the case, according to spokesperson Paula McMahon.

Calls to Trantalis were not immediately returned Friday. His chief of staff referred a reporter to Trantalis.
