16-year-old killed, six others injured in crash that flipped car in Pompano Beach

A 16-year-old boy was killed and four teens were hospitalized when a crash flipped a Mercedes Benz and pushed it into oncoming traffic in Pompano Beach on Friday night, deputies said. Two people in a nearby car also were hospitalized.

The 16-year-old was driving the Mercedes west down East Copans Road approaching Leisure Boulevard just before 8 p.m. with four other teens inside, three 17-year-old boys and one 17-year-old girl, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said in a media release. At the same time, an 82-year-old man was driving a Toyota Sienna south down Leisure Boulevard, approaching East Copans Road. As the man made a left turn onto East Copans Road, the Toyota and the Mercedes collided.

The 16-year-old lost control of the car and it rolled onto its roof before sliding across the road into eastbound traffic, according to the release. There, it collided with a Lexus RX 350 with a man and a passenger inside. Debris from the crash also struck a nearby Toyota RAV4 as the Mercedes slid by.

Pompano Beach Fire Rescue arrived and took all five teens in the Mercedes and the occupants of the Lexus to the hospital, according to the release. There, the 16-year-old was pronounced dead.

The man in the Sienna and driver of the RAV4 did not report any injuries.

Detectives believe “excessive speed” may have contributed to the crash, the release said. The investigation remains ongoing.

The release did not identify any of the teens involved in the crash.
