Shing, Russo named SSC Players of the Week

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Sunshine State Conference announced the Players of the Week for the week of February 3rd through 9th on Monday afternoon. Nova Southeastern had two student-athletes recognized, Sofia Shing (Women’s Tennis) and Gianna Russo (Softball) earned honors. The Sunshine State Conference weekly awards are presented by Pollo Campero.  

Shing went undefeated across four matches for NSU, as the Sharks earned a pair of victories, including an SSC win over Rollins. In NSU’s 7-0 win against St. Thomas, Shing and partner Isabella Ciancaglini won 6-0 at #2 doubles. Shing went on to win 6-1, 6-0 at #2 singles. The New Zealander and Ciancaglini followed with a 7-6 (7-2) win against Rollins’ #2 duo. Shing ended the week with a 7-5, 6-4 victory at #3 singles against the Tars. 

In six games last week, including four against Top-25 competition, Russo compiled a .400 batting average, a .455 on-base percentage, and a .750 slugging percentage. The Homer Glen, Illinois product was 8-for-20 at the plate with nine runs scored, seven runs batted in, three extra-base hits, and two walks as NSU took 1-of-2 from No. 16 East Stroudsburg and swept No. 19 Wingate and Colorado Mines. Her top performance of the week came in a two-game set against Mines, where she went 4-for-7 with six runs scored and three RBI. Defensively, the infielder had 10 putouts and 10 assists in 20 chances.
