Eight people were hospitalized and a woman died after multiple cars, including a van and a semi-trailer truck, crashed Tuesday on Florida’s Turnpike near the Griffin Road exit in Davie, officials said.
The van and semi-truck crashed in the southbound lanes of the Turnpike near mile marker 54, where Davie Fire Rescue pronounced one woman dead, Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Indiana Miranda said shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Davie Fire Rescue Fire Marshal Robert Taylor said one adult was taken by helicopter to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale and seven other people, including three children, were taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood.
One of the children taken to Memorial was an infant, Miranda said.
The southbound lanes remain closed as of shortly after 4 p.m., Miranda said. Traffic is being rerouted from the Turnpike at exit 53 to U.S. 441.
Traffic Homicide corporals are further investigating.
