Coconut Creek man charged with robbing banks near Boca Raton and Delray Beach, fleeing with over $40,000

A Coconut Creek man is charged with robbing two banks near Boca Raton and Delray Beach, escaping with over $20,000 each time, prosecutors say.

Courtney Mallory, 44, was arrested Wednesday on two counts of bank robbery, one of which occurred only a week ago.

The first robbery took place on June 5, at the Truist Bank on State Road 441 in West Boca. A little after 9:30 a.m., Mallory entered the bank wearing gloves, a black hoodie over his face, and a blue face covering, according to the criminal complaint.

He brandished what appeared to be a black semi-automatic handgun at the bank tellers, jumped onto the counter, and ordered them to take money out of their registers and put it in the black backpack across his chest, according to the complaint. Then he ordered them to take him to the vault, where he had them open their lockers, take money out, and put it in his backpack. He fled with over $20,000.

On July 12, the suspect committed a second successful robbery, according to the complaint. This time, he is accused of walking into the Bank of America at 13700 South Jog Road near Delray Beach wearing a similar outfit as before, except with a white surgical mask. Again, he took out a gun, jumped on the counter, and forced the teller to take money out of the register and put it in his backpack, the complaint states. This time, however, when Mallory told the manager, at gunpoint, to take him to the vault, the manager refused. The suspect fled, again with over $20,000.

FBI agents used CCTV footage and phone and vehicle records to tie him to the crimes, according to the complaint. The Nissan Altima spotted outside both banks is registered to his wife.

On Wednesday, five days after the Delray Beach robbery, agents entered the couple’s Coconut Creek apartment on a search warrant. They seized over $19,000 in cash still wrapped in bank bands, Mallory’s iPhone, multiple pairs of black pants and Yeezy shoes resembling those worn during the robberies, according to the complaint. The phone’s internet history showed searches for multiple banks, including the Bank of America that was robbed.

When agents searched the garage, they found several items similar to those worn during the robberies, including a black backpack, latex gloves, a white surgical mask and a black pellet gun. They placed Mallory under arrest.

Mallory had his first appearance Thursday in West Palm Beach federal court. A pretrial detention hearing is set for July 25 in West Palm Beach.
