Mystery of Dania Beach monkey colony solved

A colony of African vervet monkeys has lived in Dania Beach, near Fort Lauderdale airport, since the late 1940s. Now a scientist at Florida Atlantic University has found genetic confirmation that the monkeys’ ancestors came from West Africa, escaping from a roadside zoo in 1948. The monkeys live on red palm seeds, lizards and handouts of human food. (Florida Atlantic University/Courtesy)
