No one knows how many thousands of pythons infest the Everglades. They arrived through the exotic pet trade, as released pets or through escapes during Hurricane Andrew, experts say, and have taken a fearful toll on wildlife. In Everglades National Park, many small mammals, such as marsh rabbits, have become rare. The snakes also eat birds, alligators and many species of mammal, including full-grown deer.
