The skies may have looked pretty on Sunday morning, but there’s nasty weather coming our way this afternoon, forecasters warn.
Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected over portions of South Florida this afternoon and evening from Jupiter to Homestead, according to the National Weather Service.
These storms could bring hail, frequent lightning, torrential downpours, damaging wind gusts and the potential for funnel clouds and tornadoes, said Robert Garcia, a senior meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Miami.
Forecasters are also warning that water might pool on roads, parking lots and other areas with poor drainage.
The rain showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop this afternoon, with a focus around the Lake Okeechobee region and eventually the eastern half of South Florida.
There is also the possibility of isolated waterspouts.
Motorists should slow down, use low-beam headlights and allow extra time to reach their destination.
