A Broward County teacher was arrested Wednesday, accused of threatening a deputy and failing to leave the Cooper City middle school where he taught music, according to court testimony.
Larry Brewer, 63, taught at Pioneer Middle School, at 5350 SW 90th Ave.
During a court hearing Thursday, Assistant State Attorney Eric Linder said the incident began with a transfer letter from the school district to Brewer.
“I’m very concerned, your honor, for the safety and welfare of not just [a deputy], but for the students and staff,” Linder said.
Details about Brewer’s transfer were not immediately available.
Linder said the Broward Sheriff Office’s investigation found co-workers and Brewer’s wife who described how Brewer is a hunter who has firearms.
Court records show Brewer’s wife is divorcing her husband.
“She left him because of her fears of his weapons,” Linder said.
Brewer, who acted in his own defense during the hearing, said, “I don’t have a gun or nothing.”
Broward County Judge Kal Evans ordered Brewer to surrender any weapons he has to law enforcement while he awaits trail.
Evans set a $30,000 bond, required Brewer to wear a GPS monitor if he is released from jail and to not contact the middle school or return to any school in the district.
According to state records, Brewer was first certified to teach music in Florida in 1993.
The school district did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
