Kendell Williams, a Coral Glades High School athlete, died on March 27 after sustaining multiple injuries in a highway collision as she and her friends headed to the beach over spring break.
Williams, 16, was a passenger in a Dodge Journey traveling east on Interstate 595 on March 22 when a Toyota Corolla veered into its path, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
After the two cars collided, the Dodge began rotating clockwise, overturned several times and launched over a concrete barrier wall, according to FHP. The car rolled down an embankment, crashed through a 6-foot chain link fence and finally stopped on its left side on a grassy shoulder.
Two passengers were ejected, although FHP Lt. Alvaro Feola said it isn’t clear if Williams was one of them.
The Coral Glades High School flag football team tweeted that the team was heartbroken “over the loss of Kendell Williams. Not only was she talented, and athletic, she was the most genuine and kind person ever. A true team player, RIP.”
Williams was one of six passengers in the Dodge, which was driven by Nikolle Reina Fulton, 16, of Coral Springs. She had minor injuries, as did the other passengers.
Fulton said on Twitter she was on I-595 heading to the beach with her friends when she was cut off in traffic and did her best to compensate.
The driver of the Corolla, Yanelin Del Vall Tovar, 37, of Oakland Park, suffered minor injuries, as did the driver of a third car involved in the crash, Doniercy R. Suarez, 45, of Royal Palm Beach.
