A Tamarac man is accused of stealing checks worth more than $30,000 while working in the office of the Miami-Dade County Clerk of the Courts.
David Michael Santana, 24, was a court records specialist when he stole 53 checks that were intended to pay for court records, according to a Miami-Dade police arrest report.
The checks totaled $30,320 and Santana is accused of depositing them into seven different personal bank accounts belonging to his girlfriend and other friends.
The checks were payments for documents that were supposed to be recorded at the Clerk’s Office, but the documents were thrown in a recycle bin instead, investigators said.
Santana was arrested in Coral Springs on Tuesday and taken to Miami-Dade’s jail without incident, police said.
He is charged with grand theft and official misconduct, records show.
Investigators are asking anyone with information about this case or others to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers, anonymously, at 305-471-8477 or 866-471-8477 or go online to crimestoppersmiami.com and select Give a Tip.
