“Be respectful and never lie are the only rules in my classroom,” Nova Middle School teacher Kristin Murphy said in posted remarks after being named Broward County’s top teacher on Thursday night.
At the Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center, Broward County Public Schools held its annual Caliber Awards Ceremony to recognize the district’s top educators.
Murphy teaches world history and pre-law at Nova Middle and has been an educator for more than 20 years.
A colorful flower bouquet and a check for $1,000 were presented to Murphy who seemed shocked as her name was called and she went up to the stage to be recognized and awarded.
Murphy told WSVN-Ch. 7 she was honored to be among her “incredible” peers who were finalists for the award.
“When I saw their back stories I was like ‘no way it’s going to be me, look at them!’”
When not in the classroom, Murphy is a CrossFit competitor and does dragon boat racing, according to her district profile.
The other educators recognized during the 2019 Caliber Awards are:
Principal of the Year: Philip Bullock, Walker Elementary School.
Assistant Principal of the Year: Erin Brown, Hollywood Hills High School.
School-Related/District Employee of the Year: Brittany Poitier, Broadview Elementary School.
The Broward school system is the sixth-largest school district in the country.
