On Easter Sunday 2010, Pompano Beach resident Yvonne Oulton was found beaten to death inside her minivan.
The case stunned the local poker community, which knew the 62-year-old woman and her husband Robert, also a gambler, who was ultimately convicted of killing her and sentenced to life in prison.
The cable network Discovery ID will revisit the murder as part of a six-part series called “Heart of Darkness.” Oulton’s episode, called “Gambling with the Devil,” airs at 9 p.m. Saturday.
South Floridians may recall the well publicized case.
On April 4, Robert Oulton struck his wife with a hammer about 10 times half an hour before he went to the Isle Casino & Racing in Pompano Beach for a tournament, according to Sun Sentinel archives.
He had left her body in their silver 2007 Dodge Caravan in a warehouse area less than a mile from the casino.
Robert Oulton, also 62 at the time, left the casino after an hour and called their grown son Bryan who was unaware of the slaying, to help him search for her that night.
They found her bludgeoned body on the floor of the van. Bryan Oulton said he knew his father was a suspect when police questioned him two days later.
Broward Sheriff’s Office arrested Robert Oulton two days after the slaying.
In court in 2015, he said he killed his wife because she talked about interfering in their son’s poker tour business, and he said that would have alienated the son from them. A jury convicted Robert Oulton of second-degree murder.
The Discovery ID episode will feature footage of Robert Oulton’s police interrogation and an interview with his son, according to the network.
