It was early on a Sunday morning when Akeano Lewis left the Hibiscus nightclub and restaurant in Sunrise. Following Lewis out of the bar as he took his last steps were four men, including one armed with a gun, police say.
On Jan. 27, as Lewis, 22, reached a parking lot outside the club, at 6289 W. Sunrise Blvd., he was shot twice in his back.
Lewis tried to run away, but after he fell, the gunman stood over him, continued to fire a black handgun and a third bullet struck Lewis, according to an arrest warrant.
A witness told police that Tahjae Adonnis Jackson, 24, who has ties to Lauderhill and Lauderdale Lakes, was the gunman.
Surveillance video recorded the four men walking behind Lewis and into the parking lot until they went out of the range of the camera.
At about 5 a.m., video shows the men drove away from the business: Three of them were in a red Dodge sedan and Jackson was in a silver sedan, police said.
Moments later, a man found Lewis’ body on the ground and called 911.
Sunrise Fire Rescue took Lewis to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, where he died.
Lewis, of Lauderhill, had worked as an air conditioning technician. A 3-year-old boy survives him, police said.
On Saturday, officers arrested Jackson on suspicion of committing premeditated murder. He has been hospitalized since he was taken into custody.
Detectives have not said why Jackson was receiving medical treatment or what may have prompted the killing.
The investigation has found so far that the conflict began with an argument inside the club.
