Bond set at $600,000 for Kayla Mendoza

The families of two women who were killed in a wrong-way crash on the Sawgrass Expressway urged a judge to deny bond for the woman alleged to be responsible. Kayla Mendoza, 21, made her first appearance in court Tuesday afternoon. She appeared by closed-circuit television from a Pompano Beach jail, where she faces eight criminal charges, including DUI manslaughter. “Kayla Mendoza killed my sister and I don’t think it’s at all fair for her to be set free and have any bond,” Ashley Ferrante told the judge. Ferrante’s sister, Kaitlyn, was killed in the November 2013 crash. Maria Catronio also died in the head-on collision. Judge John Hurley was not able to deny her bond by law, but he did set her bond at $600,000. He noted that Mendoza never had a driver’s license and was ticketed for driving without one six years ago, never paying the fine. Court records show Mendoza was not only drunk, but also had marijuana in her system at the time of the crash. She wrote “2 drunk 2 care” on Twitter just hours before the crash. Final $172 million approved for PortMiami tunnel construction

Miami-Dade County commissioners voted Tuesday to approve the final $172 million of its dedicated $1 billion for the construction of a port tunnel in Miami. Chris Hodgkins, vice president of the construction company in charge of the project, told Local 10 the tunnel that will connect Watson Island to PortMiami is 41 days away from opening. Hodgkins said cargo trucks and cruise ship traffic will be using the tunnel by the end of May. The tunnel beneath Government Cut is intended to reroute cargo trucks that currently clog downtown Miami on the way to and from the port. It is seen as a critical component of downtown and PortMiami’s development as the county’s No. 2 economic engine prepares to welcome the super Panamax ships through a widened Panama Canal. “We’re going to be the only port in the United States that goes from an interstate right to the port without even a traffic light,” Hodgkins said. …read more Source: WPLG Local News     ...
