New law requires car seats for children up to 5 years old

Parents will have to use a car seat for children up to 5 years old under a new law approved by Gov. Rick Scott. Scott on Tuesday signed a bill (HB 225) that increases Florida’s car seat requirement from 4 years old to 5 years old. Starting in January, parents will no longer be allowed to use seat belts for children under 5. The new law allows parents to use booster seats to meet the requirements. Past efforts to raise the age requirement for car seats have gone nowhere in the Legislature. Former Gov. Jeb Bush in 2001 vetoed a bill to increase the age. There are exceptions to the new law, including if a child is being transported by someone who is not a member of the immediate family. …read more Source: WPLG Local News     ...

Florida leads nation in May short sales of homes

Once again, Florida led the nation in short sales of homes in May. The research firm RealtyTrac said Tuesday that more than 11 percent of all home sales in Florida were short sales in May. A short sale takes place when an owner sells a home for less than the amount the owner owes on the property. RealtyTrac also said that Florida had the nation’s second-highest rate of distressed sales, with almost a quarter of sales either short sales, foreclosure auctions or bank-owned sales. Only Nevada had a higher rate of distressed sales. But the rate of distressed sales in Florida is declining from a year ago, when it was almost 27 percent. …read more Source: WPLG Local News     ...

Opening statements begin in alleged cop killer trial

Opening statements began Monday in the trial of Andrew James Rolle, 26, who’s accused of fatally shooting a Miami detective while off duty. Rolle is claiming he shot the officer in self-defense, but prosecutors say he should be convicted of first-degree murder. The case dates back to 2008, when police say Rolle shot and killed James Walker, who worked in the domestic battery unit for seven years. Rolle’s attorney claims the shooting was an act of self-defense and tried to get immunity under Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law. The attorney argued Monday that his client fired his weapon after Walker pulled out his gun. Prosecutors were quick to point out that Rolle had just shot another man, and was trying to get away using the unmarked police car that Walker was sitting in at the time. The first witness called Monday was the officer who responded to shots fired. He confirmed that it was Rolle who he saw inside Walker’s car where he found the detective shot to death. …read more Source: WPLG Local News     ...
